LG Display Announces Mass Production of 13-inch Tandem OLED Panel for Laptops
LG Display, a global leader in display technologies, has revealed that it has commenced mass production of the world's first 13-inch Tandem OLED panel designed for laptops. The company aims to capture the OLED market by leveraging the enhanced performance and reduced power consumption of Tandem OLED technology. Initially introduced by LG Display in 2019, Tandem OLED technology combines two sets of red, green, and blue (RGB) organic light emitting layers to deliver superior durability and performance compared to traditional single-layer OLED panels. This results in a longer lifespan and increased brightness.
Tandem OLED panels were initially utilized in automotive OLEDs due to their stringent quality requirements, enabling them to operate reliably for extended periods. They are also well-suited for IT products that demand prolonged screen usage, such as laptops, monitors, and tablets. LG Display's latest Tandem OLED panel, specifically tailored for laptops, offers double the lifespan and triple the brightness of standard single-layer OLED displays, while reducing power consumption by up to 40%. This makes it ideal for high-performance IT devices like AI laptops, as well as regular laptops. By optimizing the components and structure of the 13-inch Tandem OLED panel, LG Display has managed to make it approximately 40% thinner and 28% lighter than existing OLED laptop screens, enhancing its sleek design and portability.
The new panel combines convenience and performance with high definition, featuring a WQXGA+ (2880x1800) resolution and precise color reproduction that meets 100% of the DCI-P3 standard color area set by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), ensuring high-definition content is displayed with exceptional clarity.
With OLED's self-emissive pixels and infinite contrast ratio, the panel has received certification as Display HDR (High Dynamic Range) True Black 500 from the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). This certification confirms its ability to display bright and dark images with exceptional clarity, enhancing their three-dimensionality and providing a viewing experience that closely mimics natural human vision.
Furthermore, LG Display has integrated a touch sensor within the panel to enhance touch performance and deliver a highly responsive touch solution, ensuring a precise touch experience.
"We are committed to enhancing the competitiveness of OLED products for IT applications and delivering unique customer value based on the distinctive benefits of Tandem OLED, such as extended lifespan, high brightness, and low power consumption," stated Jae-Won Jang, Vice President and Head of the Medium Display Product Planning Division at LG Display.
